Great graphic design is powered by great font selection. But picking great fonts is a challenge most people. Luckily, Canva has made adding great fonts to your designs much easier. In this tutorial, our team of design experts will cover the best neon in Canva. These neon fonts are created using custom elements as opposed to the standard text effects.
What Are Neon Fonts?
Neon fonts are a type of typography that imitates the appearance of neon signs, which are made from illuminated gas-filled glass tubes. Some common characteristics of neon fonts include:
- Glowing effect: Neon fonts typically have a glowing appearance, replicating the illuminated look of real neon signs.
- Bold and vibrant colors: Neon fonts often feature bright, vivid colors, such as red, blue, green, yellow, or pink, to create the illusion of light emitted by neon tubes.
- Rounded letterforms: Many neon fonts have rounded letterforms, as the glass tubes used in actual neon signs are more easily bent into curves rather than sharp angles. This results in a smoother, more fluid look.
- Continuous stroke: The letters in neon fonts often have a continuous stroke, mimicking the continuous glass tube in neon signs. This can create a sense of connectedness between characters.
- Varied stroke width: Some neon fonts incorporate varied stroke widths to emulate the fluctuating brightness of neon lights and to add depth and dimension to the text.
- Shadow and highlights: To enhance the glowing effect, neon fonts often include shadows and highlights that make the text appear more three-dimensional and create the illusion of depth.
- Handwritten or script style: Many neon fonts have a handwritten or script appearance, reflecting the craftsmanship involved in creating real neon signs.
- Distinctive or retro aesthetic: Neon fonts often evoke a distinctive, nostalgic, or retro feel, as neon signs were especially popular during the mid-20th century.
- Decorative elements: Some neon fonts incorporate additional decorative elements like stars, arrows, or underlines, which are common features of neon signs.
- Layered designs: Some neon fonts come with multiple layers, such as an outline, glow, or shadow layer, which can be combined to create different visual effects and customize the overall appearance.
